BrainTech 2025 (working title) is a one-day event designed to spotlight and accelerate brain technology innovation in Australia. This initiative stems from deep dives into ageing, brain capital, and tech-driven solutions for brain health—where we have seen firsthand the need for better collaboration, commercialisation, and investment in this space.

• The Tech is Here – Neurotech is transforming how we understand, monitor, and enhance brain function. From AI-powered diagnostics to brain-computer interfaces, the field is advancing rapidly.
• The Need is Here – Brain disorders account for 15% of global disabilities, costing Australia billions annually. Workplace mental health claims alone have surged nearly 40% since 2017.
• The Investment is Here (Almost!) – While the US, Europe, and China are pouring billions into brain research, Australia risks lagging behind. Startups like Omniscient, Cyban, and Seer Medical have secured funding but many others struggle to find local backers and others like Saluda and Synchron have had to move overseas. Mental health startups in Australia have been relying heavily on social impact investors, foundations and family offices.
• The Challenge is Here – Australia has world-class neuroscience research but struggles to translate discoveries into commercial success. While Australia’s neuroscience research output is in the top 10, we are not in the top 10 for patents (2023). UNESCO includes Australia among the countries that “lag behind in effectively translating neurotech knowledge into patentable innovations”.
